Field Notes: Autumn Layering
Layering is less a formula than a habit—one built over years of dressing for weather that changes three times before lunch. Here is what has been working for us this month.
Start with Proportion
The easiest way to layer well is to let one piece be generous and everything else follow its lead. A wide dress under a fitted jacket. A slim trouser under a coat with room to spare. Fighting for volume in every layer is how outfits start to feel like armor instead of clothing.
Dress for the coldest hour of your day, and unbutton from there.
Our Current Rotation
A slip dress, worn alone in September and under a turtleneck by October. A wool coat that has outlived three closets. Boots that were a mistake for exactly one season and have been correct ever since.
None of it is complicated. Most of it is old. That is, more or less, the whole idea.
